The week of Sept 9-13, 2019
This past week, which was the 2nd week of the fall semester, English classes resumed for the High school students. They had the previous week off from school, because they are on a different schedule from the rest of the school.
Mitch, a volunteer from Canada, and I are teaching the high school students two days a week, 90 minutes each class. Mitch teaches a slower pace class and I teach a faster pace class. The high school students did great. They handled well the change in the English schedule. Last semester, they had classes four times a week, 45 minutes each class. The students paid attention and participated in class.
Also, this past week, the English students between grades 6 and high school learned what is John 8:31-32 in English. This verse was mentioned in the sermon on September 8. It is my goal to incorporate at least one of the verses and one of the praise songs that are featured in the on-site church service. Reciting verses and praise songs helps the students learn new words, improve their pronouciation and it keeps part of the message fresh in their minds during the week. Unfortunately, I wasn´t able to go over any of the praise songs last week.
Other updates:
1) The third year junior high students students are still struggling with including a first year junior high student. On Monday, I took the time during their English class to talk about how to deal with unfavorable circumstances. I mentioned that throughout their lives they will find themselves in situations they dont like. They have to learn how to deal with it. I told them they often can´t change their circumstances, but they can control their attitudes and actions.

2) I share a classroom with another teacher. Due to a shortage on classroom space, a fellow volunteer teacher was placed in my room. Even though its not the ideal, its working better than I expected. We have enough room between us and for most of the time, her class doesnt interfer with my classes.
3) I had to see a physical therapist due to pain in my hip and foot. I was told I have inflammation in my lower back which apparently was affecting the nerves in my hip and my foot. My therapist reminded me of the importance of daily stretching and exercise.
4) Ariadne turned 11 years old!
She will have a party later this month when some relatives will be visting us.
I bought her some ice cream for her birthday. She had just finished piano practice at the music school she attends. We stopped at a Walmart which has a McDonald´s ice cream stand inside. It is on the way home. While we were there, I ran into a former student of mine. She is currently working at Walmart while attending college. It was good to catch up with her and encouraging to hear that she is continuing with her studies.
5) Brenda resumed teaching math to two girls who live at Pan de Vida. They had taken a break over the summer.
