Back in Mexico

Thursday, May 9, 2019

Greetings,

We made it safely back to our home in Mexico. The reason for leaving Mexico was to get new passports and permits.

The following are highlights from our 550 mile (880 kilometer) car trip from Mission, Texas to Queretaro, Mexico.

  • Departed Mission, Texas on May 8 around 10:30 am.
    • We wanted to leave earlier, but it took a while to get everything packed.
  • No security screening on the Mexican side of the border.
    • Cars are randomly searched and subject to both inspections and taxes on items brought in.
  • No line at the Mexican customs office.
    • However, Bryan was there longer than normal due to be attended by a new employee.
      • During that time, Bryan found out that in the past 3 weeks, the average wait time for cars to enter Mission, Texas from Reynosa, Mexico has jumped from 90 min to 4 hours! The line can be seen from the customs office.
        • We are thankful that it only took us 80 min to cross over last month.
  • Got a new car permit and visa for Bryan.
  • No hassles at the Mexican military checkpoints that proceed after crossing the border.
    • We were waved through at 2 of the checkpoints, at the other checkpoint, the soldier just wanted to see Brenda’s ID.
  • No danger.
    • We drove to Queretaro via the Ciudad Victoria Route. A customs official said that the alternative route via Monterrey had a shooting on the highway.
  • No car trouble.
  • Experienced a major traffic delay due to highway construction.
  • Kids behaved pretty good.
    • They enjoyed getting out of the car for breaks and pit stops.
      • Especially when gas stations have unique attractions

  • Witnessed a field of cactus being burned while driving on the highway
    • It made for an interesting sight during the night.
  • Bryan was happy not to get car sick, especially when driving through the mountains
  • We arrived home in Queretaro on May 9 around 2 am
    • Nearly 15 hours after starting the journey home.
Later, we will provide more details about our actual time back in the USA. We just wanted to send you a quick update on how the trip back home went.

We are grateful for all the prayers and the support. It meant so much to us.

Sincerely,

Bryan and Brenda Ottoson
