Teaching at another orphanage
On the beginning of this month I started teaching at another orphanage in addition to my teaching at the Pan de Vida oprhanage.
Esperanza Para Ti (Hope For You) is located 3 miles
away from Pan de Vida.
Duane, a
Canadian volunteer who helps at both orphanages, said that Esperanza was in
need of an English teacher. The kids attend schools outside the orphanage. Despite
having English classes in their schools, their proficiency is very low.
So after prayer and thinking about it, I decided to
help out there in addition to my work at Pan de Vida. The leaders at Esperanza are very supportive
of my work there by providing what I need in the classroom, providing structure
for the kids and encouraging the kids to learn.
I teach 1 class twice a week to a group of 11 students. Their educational level ranges from junior high to university. Our classroom is in the living room of the girls’ dorm.
My students are motivated to learn. Many of them want to be able to learn English to be able to communicate with the members of the short-term missions teams that come from Canada.
These teams will come for a 1 to 2 weeks to help out at the orphanage. It made me realize how much of an impact theys can make on the lives of children in a short time even if they can’t understand each other’s language.
It is a joy to be around my students at Esperanza. They have been receptive
to me and open to learning. I’m praying that my relationship with them will
grow and that I can minister to them in Christ through teaching.
We started with the basics in English and are building up from there. Just like in my English classes at Pan de Vida, I not only teach them the structure of the English language but also praise songs and Bible verses in English.
